RentItems: Rethinking Ownership in a Sharing Economy World

An Incubation Venture of Zynergy’s Digital AI Lab

RentItems—a venture incubated within Zynergy’s Digital AI Lab—was created to reimagine how people access what they need without the burden of ownership. As a peer-to-peer (P2P) rental marketplace, RentItems enables individuals and small businesses to rent everyday items to one another securely and conveniently—from tools and electronics to party gear, outdoor equipment, and more.

With a functional minimum viable product (MVP), completed market testing, and early adoption feedback collected, RentItems now finds itself at a pivotal juncture: Is the market ready for a true peer-to-peer rental economy? And if not yet, what will it take to get there?

The Original Vision: Ownership Reimagined

  • Today’s consumers are rethinking the value of owning infrequently used goods. According to Forbes, the average power drill is used only 13 minutes over its lifetime, and U.S. households have more than $1 trillion worth of idle items collecting dust. Simultaneously, sustainability-conscious Gen Z and millennial consumers are seeking ways to reduce waste, increase access, and avoid unnecessary purchases.

RentItems set out to solve this by:

  • Creating a secure, local platform for renting and lending items
  • Offering insurance and dispute resolution features to build trust
  • Providing digital tools for inventory, pricing, pickup/delivery coordination, and reputation management
  • Enabling neighborhood-level, business-to-consumer, and peer-to-peer rentals on a single platform

Progress So Far

We’ve launched a working MVP at RentItems.com, tested the model in select U.S. markets, and validated some early hypotheses:

  • There is consumer demand for accessing rather than owning
  • Local rentals are attractive for high-cost, single-use items
  • P2P supply-building is more challenging than demand generation
  • Trust, convenience, and delivery are key adoption barriers

These learnings have helped us refine our product roadmap and value proposition—but have also raised honest, critical questions about scale, timing, and long-term viability.

Market Challenges: A Real-Time Reckoning

While the rental economy is thriving in niche verticals (Airbnb for lodging, Turo for cars, Fat Llama for gear), horizontal marketplaces—those offering many item categories—face inherent challenges:

  • Chicken-and-egg problem: Supply is hesitant without demand; demand evaporates without supply
  • Low frequency of use: Unlike ridesharing or housing, general item rentals are often infrequent, seasonal, or spontaneous
  • Trust and logistics: Consumers hesitate to borrow from strangers, especially without streamlined delivery and quality control

Even high-profile P2P rental startups have struggled with retention and operational sustainability. That’s why we’re opening the doors to community-sourced innovation and strategic input.

Why This Still Matters

Despite hurdles, the long-term trend remains clear: the access economy is growing. Deloitte, PwC, and Nielsen report that more than 70% of younger consumers prefer access over ownership when price, convenience, and trust align. Moreover, the global market for rental services is projected to surpass $200 billion by 2032, driven by sustainability goals, urban living, and the digitization of community-based commerce.

As AI, automation, and hyperlocal logistics evolve, the infrastructure to make “rent anything, anytime” more practical is within reach. RentItems is well-positioned to evolve with these tailwinds—whether as a B2C logistics partner, a white-label rental solution for local businesses, or a reimagined, vertical-specific rental marketplace.

Exploring What’s Next

Zynergy’s Digital AI Lab is built for moments like this—where traction meets uncertainty, and smart pivots can unlock breakthrough opportunities. We’re now focused on:

  • Re-evaluating product-market-fit: What are the best item categories, use cases, and geographies to focus on?
  • Identifying underserved rental verticals: Party rentals? Educational tools? Medical equipment? Trade shows?
  • Considering B2B2C and SaaS pivots: Could local retailers or community centers use our platform to launch their own rental systems?
  • Collaborating with logistics partners to explore fulfillment solutions that reduce friction for renters and lenders
  • Crowdsourcing ideas from operators, investors, and early adopters who have insight into the sharing economy’s next evolution

Who We Want to Hear From

We’re inviting feedback, insight, and collaboration from people who have lived or led through platform growth challenges—or see opportunity where others might see friction. That includes:

  • Marketplace experts who understand what it takes to overcome two-sided network barriers
  • Investors and advisors looking to help pivot, validate, or relaunch promising ventures
  • Founders of successful vertical rental businesses who may want to collaborate or consolidate capabilities
  • Municipal and nonprofit leaders exploring rental models as part of circular economy or community development goals
  • AI and logistics professionals interested in tackling trust, verification, and delivery at scale

Let’s Co-Create the Future of Renting

RentItems may still be early, but the questions we’re asking—and the potential we see—are bold and worth pursuing. The foundation has been laid. Now we’re looking for the right ideas, people, and partners to either pivot or push forward with clarity.
